Cruise Ship Infection Claims

A seafaring vacation can turn from memorable to horrible relatively quickly when a cruise ship experiences an outbreak of salmonella, stomach flu/norovirus, E-coli, and a variety of other outbreaks that can ruin vacations and harm the health of passengers. Cruise lines have been targeted by well-founded lawsuits for decades due to viral and bacteriological diseases that were caused by the cruise line’s negligence and poor sanitary practices.

The Washington Post reports that between 2017-2019, there were 32 outbreaks of norovirus/stomach flu that made 3,359 people sick. As we’ll discuss below, Covid has changed the incidence rate of norovirus over the years following 2019, although it has brought risks of its own.

If you have become ill as a result of a cruise line’s negligence, you could be entitled to compensation for related medical costs, lost wages, and, in some instances, pain and suffering. A cruise ship infection attorney at Brais Law Firm is available to provide you with a risk-free consultation to determine if you have a cruise ship injury case

COVID Protocols Have had A Positive Impact On Lesser Infections

While the Covid pandemic has been a broadly negative experience across the board, there has been an upside. Due to the cleaning and sanitization practices associated with Covid, norovirus/stomach flu cases have reached a noteworthy low. As of August 22, 2022, only two cases of norovirus outbreaks that affected more than 3% of the passengers or crew were reported to the CDC, as noted by the Washington Post. These are levels significantly lower than in pre-pandemic years.

Cruise Lines Continue to Infect Passengers

The CDC received a report from Carnival Cruise Line concerning an outbreak of norovirus, which caused vomiting and diarrhea among 77 of 2,109 passengers and 16 of 1,079 crew. This happened May 24-31, 2022, despite Carnival Cruise Line increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures in line with the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan.

Whether or not the ship’s plans are in line with standards sufficient to relieve the cruise line of liability will determine if you are able to recover compensation for your illness. Collecting and then analyzing these documents can be difficult, but your cruise ship infection attorney can help with your cruise ship injury case.

It can be difficult to determine when a third party is at fault and ultimately liable for your illness, but there are legal instruments available to your attorney to collect evidence in support of your case. As a result of rising volumes in travel and ongoing shifts in recommendations concerning sterilization and other protocols to prevent viruses and Covid, cruise lines have occasionally fallen behind. When they do, and the evidence proves it, you may be entitled to compensation for any related harm you have experienced.
