KRISTV.com reports watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi received a request for a medevac at 10 a.m., on January 11, 2011 from the Mexican Rescue Command Center in Tampico, Mexico, stating that a crewmember aboard the Gijon IX had reportedly suffered a laceration on his head while working on deck. The fishing boat was approximately 40 miles south of South Padre Island, Texas when the accident occurred.

The Coast Guard dispatched a HH-65C Dolphin Helicopter which hoisted the injured fisherman and transported him to Brownsville Air Port wherein he later received care at a local hospital. Coast Guard pilot Derek Mitchell stated, “It was rough weather out there today, but we worked together with our partner agencies and were fortunate to be able to safely medevac this gentleman,” The fisherman’s condition is unknown.
